Sarah McLachlan于1968年一月二十八日出生于加拿大的Nova Scotia，从小就展现出她在音乐上过人的天份，学生时期，她曾经学过钢琴、吉他以及声乐，她十七岁时和她的同学们组成了一个名为〝Octor Game〞的新浪潮乐团，Sarah正是这个乐团中主要的创作来源，乐团出色的表现也让唱片公司慕名而来，希望能和她们签约录制专辑。但Sarah却在其 父母的反对之下退出，进入Nova Scotia学院攻读艺术与设计。
Sarah McLachlan在1989年推出她的首张个人专辑〝Touch〞，首支单曲〝Vox〞除了在排行上取得优秀的成绩外，更连续蝉连数周加拿大电台点播冠 军曲，并突破金唱片的销售量，所有的词曲创作都由Sarah所包办，充满其独特的个人色彩。Sarah空灵清新的唱腔与融合了流行与摇滚的编曲都令人耳目 一新，其相当飘渺的歌声却流露出极为成熟的一面，令她立即成为新女性主义的代言人，〝Ｑ〞杂志更给与四颗星的高分评价。
Sarah McLachlan在1991年推出她的第二张专辑〝Solace〞，和前一张专辑一样，Sarah除了包办所有的词曲创作外，更展现她在空心吉他和钢琴 的造诣。专辑中的〝Drawn To The Rhytnm〞和〝Into The Fire〞两首单曲先后成为冠军曲，并打入美国告示牌排行榜前二十名，引起美国流行音乐界的注意。本专辑不仅获得各界一致的好评，也缔造白金唱片的销售佳 绩，奠定其在加拿大的本土天后地位。
在1994年，Sarah McLachlan的新专辑〝Fumbling Towards Ecstasy〞中，共有〝Possession〞、〝Hold On〞以及〝Good Enough〞三首歌曲进入美国告示牌排行榜，专辑销售也突破多白金记录，成功打入国际市场。在专辑〝Fumbling Towards Ecstasy〞推出之后，Sarah接下来便展开为期一年的巡回表演，而她也在1995年发行专辑〝The Freedom Sessions〞，其中收录的歌曲大部分是她前一张专辑〝Fumbling Towards Ecstasy〞中的歌曲重新编曲版本。
Sarah McLachlan在此次的巡回途中，举办一「由女性观点出发」的演唱会的想法渐渐成形，在大家的热烈回应支持下，Sarah组成了一个筹备会，预计在 1997年夏天举办一场长达八周的大型音乐盛会，更借神话故事中的女神Lilith为名，将此活动定名为〝Lilith Fair〞，许多知名的女歌手及女子乐团包括Jewel、Sheryl Crow、Tracy Chapman、Indigo Girls、Joan Osborne、Paula Cole、Lisa Loeb以及Suzanne Vega等人都义务性热烈参与此一盛会，而在这场为期三个月的音乐盛会中，共有来自全世界数十位女歌手及乐团参与，吸引数十万人次乐迷入场，堪称史上最大 音乐盛会。
同年七月，Sarah McLachlan终于在歌迷殷切期盼下推出她的新专辑〝Surfacing〞。本专辑推出之后，来自各界的好评不断，可说是Sarah McLachlan进军国际乐坛的代表作，首支单曲〝Building Mystery〞成功进占美国告示牌排行榜冠军席次，而仅在美国一地的销售量即超过三百万张的惊人数字，其它两首单曲〝Last Dance〞和〝Black And White〞也先后挤入美国榜上。在1998年的葛莱美奖，Sarah McLachlan更是风光十足，专辑〝Surfacing〞获得最佳流行专辑，单曲〝Last Dance〞获颁最佳歌曲，而Sarah McLachlan更以一曲〝Building A Mystery〞荣获最佳女歌手大奖。在本张专辑之后，更加巩固Sarah McLachlan国际天后的地位。
1999年，Sarah McLachlan发行了一张现场专辑《Mirrorball》，尽管是张现场专辑，但是她依然延续了《Surfacing》的成功，并且获得了格莱美年 度最佳流行专辑奖(Best Pop Album)的提名，最终凭借入选电影《Brothers McMullen》原声的单曲《I Will Remember You》，Sarah McLachlan获得了第42届格莱美最佳流行女歌手奖，这也是她第二次获得该奖项。尽管在这之后，Sarah McLachlan把更多的时间和精力放在了陪伴家人上，但是由她演唱的单曲《When She Loved Me》在第43届格莱美颁奖典礼上依然获得了最佳影视歌曲奖(Best Song Written For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media.)，不过遗憾的是这首歌并非由她所创作。
2003年11月4日，Sarah McLachlan的第五张个人专辑《Afterglow》正式发行。这是Sarah McLachlan经过了长达6年的沉寂之后，终于推出了她的个人第五张专辑《Afterglow》，这位三项格莱美奖得主的作品延续了6年前专辑 《Surfacing》的辉煌，在发行一周之后就轻松的以36万1千张的销售成绩排在了Billboard 200排行榜的亚军位置上，这样的单周销售成绩也创下了Sarah McLachlan十四年来的新高。
2005年Sarah McLachlan推出了她第二张混音精选集《Bloom》，进一步见证原来有如此多风格互异的电音世代创作人对这位加拿大女伶感兴趣，其中多数选曲出自上张正式专辑 《Afterglow》。而这位葛莱美三项大奖得主，无可取代『天使女伶』，天籁音乐绝美新诠释，十大DJ群高手过招，而不变的是她继续以清灵空灵心灵之气拯救世道。
